Born in Aldeia Kikretum in the city of Ourilândia do Norte, in the state of Pará, Bati Kaiapó is a self-taught artist dedicated to paintings, fauna drawings and wooden sculptures, without ever having been taught how to paint by a white or indigenous teacher. Within the tradition of his people, he produces several handicrafts reflecting the art of his ancestors.

In his panel Serviço de manhã (Morning Duty) shown here, he used mixed techniques in acrylic paint. The title, as well as the image in the panel, stem from the memory of the stories he heard from his grandfather, who refused to adopt white habits in the village. The work shows that it was traditionally the father’s duty to leave home before sunrise to fetch game or fish for the family´s breakfast.
