Walison Melo was born in Imperatriz (MA) and lives currently in Açailândia (MA). He has been drawing since he was seven years old and has been improving himself in different visual arts techniques and artistic expressions such as urban art, graffiti, June party costumes, props production, and handicrafts. Walison is a multiple artist with experiences and training as an actor and dancer in the Afro dance group Afixirê. Since 2015, he has also been a costume designer for the June-party group Matutos do Rei. His paintings and graffiti works are all over the urban landscape of Açailândia.
His work “Blackness” highlights the beauty of black children. As reference, he used a photo he shot of a student and created an expressive image of a black girl smiling, full of simplicity, joy and beauty. The mural was one of the ways Walisson found to show the representativeness of the black population from his perspective.
